Social Media Law Student Honored in ABA Journal Blawg 100
Dec 3rd, 2009 | By Rex Gradeless | Category: Blogging, Featured, Lead Article, Social Media, Web 2.0The ABA Journal selected the Social Media Law Student blawg in their third annual 100 best legal blawgs. This blawg was selected from blogs across the globe by the Journal’s editors. The complete list can be found here.
We are truly humbled to be a part of the top 100 legal blawgs. We recognize the outstanding contributions of the other 99 ABA Blawg 100 recipients and also want to acknowledge the many other great blawgs that were not included within this years list. Many of the blawgers who came before us have been an inspiration to us.
Some comments:
“Each year, it’s gotten harder and harder to pick the 100 best blawgs because so many lawyers are now sharing their professional expertise online,” says Edward A. Adams, the Journal’s editor and publisher. “We’ve never had as strong a group of law blogs as we have this year.”
Don’t call it a comeback
I been here for years

“From the day that SocialMediaLawStudent.com was merely an idea, the dedication from everyone involved with the site is awe-inspiring. Without the efforts of the contributors and most importantly the legal tech community, the site would not be what it is today. I’m looking forward to the continued progress of the site and the journey that is SocialMediaLawStudent.com.” – Brandon Prebynski, Strategist (@prebynski)
“I’m awesome. Though Rex saved my life with this blog.” – Anonymous Contributor
“I think I started following @Rex7 on Twitter when he had a measly 4,000 followers. Now he never talks to us anymore” – Anonymous Contributor
“Who is @Rex7?” – Anonymous Contributor
“As you can see by the comments above I am truly blessed to have worked with these contributors. They keep things real. Without them, this project would not be fun.” – Rex Gradeless (@Rex7)
We are grateful to the ABA Journal for their recognition. We are grateful for those in the blogosphere who have inspired us to keep pushing. We are grateful to our critics, who are always wrong. We are most grateful to our families who have continued to give us their love and support.

About Social Media Law Student:
Rex Gradeless, dubbed “Social Media Law Student” for advocating the use of web 2.0 technologies by the legal community, is a leading source of information on the use of blogs and social media for lawyers and law firms from a new lawyer’s perspective.
As an advocate of social media use by lawyers, Rex hoped to start a conversation, to teach, and, most importantly, learn. The whole purpose of social media is to build communities and share information. Together, as a profession, the legal community might learn something. Another goal was to share information about the practice of law, discuss, debate, and hopefully demystify some of the myths about those in the legal profession.
As the site became increasingly popular, Rex reached out to a group of the most tech savvy law students, lawyers, and legal professionals to join as contributors (to your right). Despite the name Social Media “Law Student”, lawyers, judges, legal technologists, and other legal professionals mainly follow this blog. The founder just happened to be in law school at the time.
This blog stands at the vanguard of technology within the legal profession. Social Media Law Student has received awards from state bar associations, the American Bar Association, and many other groups who are pushing for change within the legal profession. Although changes within the legal profession come slowly, there are glimmers of hope.
Interesting SMLS receives this award as of the largest online social networks in the world, Facebook, boasts over 350 million active users. This is a testament to the sign of our times, the relevancy of SMLS, and a fundamental shift in how business in the legal profession is being conducted. We’re happy to stand at the forefront of these developments.
