Dominic Jaar, Tom Mighell,
Catherine Sanders Reach8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. • Continental C
Do you Twitter? Live Blog? Yammer? What are all of these technologies and how can I learn to use them to leverage my experience at ABA TECHSHOW and beyond? Come chat with our experts, learn from fellow Tweeters and offer your own words of wisdom and best practices on these new communication tools. Tweet your experience and feed the Buzz at www.techshow.com/buzz, which aggregates the news, events, and conversations about ABA TECHSHOW 2009. And don’t forget to use hashtag #techshow— or come to learn what that means!
Social Media Law Student Feedback: The panel was highly knowledgeable about the topic almost to a fault. Only about 50% in the room had a Twitter account. Some panelists may have moved too fast for those new to Twitter.
Electronic Briefs: A How-To Guide
David Masters, Tom O’Connor
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. • Northwest 2
From hyperlinks to embedded audio and video, PDF files are the way to go for electronic briefs—even simple ones. With little more than a tabbed table of contents your electronic brief becomes easier to read and, therefore, more persuasive. Come learn how to take advantage of all the features of Adobe Acrobat to make your e-brief so convenient that judges will naturally work from your brief, rather than your opponent’s, when it’s time to draft the final opinion.Social Media Law Student Feedback: Two minutes of talking about which jurisdictions had electronic filing then ideas on brief writing.
Keynote Address: The End of Lawyers?: Rethinking the Nature of Legal Services
Professor Richard Susskind, OBE
IT Adviser to the Lord Chief Justice of England
1:15 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Continental A/BProfessor Susskind’s address will identify significant emerging pressures on the legal marketplace and great change in the world of lawyers. He will claim that the legal profession is set to be driven by two main forces—by a market pull towards the commoditization of legal services, and by the pervasive development and uptake of new and disruptive legal technologies. Come learn about the main challenges facing all practicing lawyers in the 21st century.
Social Media Law Student Feedback: Professor Susskind says “future of legal communication = instant messaging, blogging, mass collaboration, social networking, & Twitter! These are not just fad.” Need I say more?
